Overview
Department of Applied Sciences thrives to accomplish its goal to develop world class engineers by providing a strong foundation in basic Sciences and Humanity courses. With an orientation of interdisciplinary teaching of fundamental courses in Science & Engineering such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Communication skills, the department has also enriched its curriculum by introducing courses such as Critical thinking, Creative thinking, Tinker lab which are essential to develop an all-round personality with innovative and creative mind. The department has 04 well-equipped laboratories for the first-year students.
The teaching faculty of the department possess rich research experience in the various fields of Science, Engineering and Management. The teaching faculty of the department have received Research grants/fellowships from reputed funding agencies such as DST, SERB, UGC-DAE, DRDO, MHRD, Govt. of India etc. Department has 03 major research laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for materials synthesis and characterization. The main research domains of the department are Composite Materials, Condensed Matter Physics, Energy storage/conversion devices, Wastewater treatment, Mathematical modelling of fluid flow, non-linear waves, Numerical techniques, Nanotechnology, Thin film Physics, Biofluid Mechanics, Electroosmosis, Nanofluids, Heat and Mass Transfer, Singular Perturbation Boundary Value Problems, Spline Methods. Faculty members of the Department are actively working with researchers from some of the leading universities/ institutes in the world as, Kyung Hee University, South Korea, RUDN University, Russia, University of South Australia, Australia, University of Leads, UK, University of Birmingham, UK, University of Calgary, Canada, University of Malaya, Malaysia, Shahid Chamran University, Iran and University of Southern Denmark, Denmark.

- Meena Laad, Head, Dept. of Applied Sciences was invited as the Co-Chair of the BRICS 4th SCIFORUM Conference organized by RUDN University, Russia.
- Neeru Bhagat was invited to attend expert committee meeting as a jury member on 10 October 2023, at INSA, DST, New Delhi for INSPIRE Awards -MANAK, National innovation Foundation, India.
- Chhaya Lande worked as an expert in Ph.D. viva in Ravidranath Tagore University, Bhopal and was also invited as a resource person in national conference on “Applied Mathematics and Statistics” organized by Bandhodkar College, Thane, Mumbai.
- Lande delivered an expert lecture on Latex in the one-week national level STTP on latex organized by M.E.S. College of Engineering, Pune.
- Kuldeep Mishra delivered an invited talk at 2nd International Conference on Environment and Energy Materials (INCEEM-2023), December 2023, Sharda University, Noida, India and chaired a technical session too in the same conference.
- Neha Divekar conducted corporate training for Tata Motors on “Effective Communication Skills”; at Flex, Ltd., Pune on “Empowering Women Leaders”; at L&T, C-TEA, Mysuru on, “Power of Communication” for employees from the Defence department.
- Amit Kumar, Assistant Professor, Applied Sciences Department participated as a speaker and delivered a Presentation at the 35th Panhellenic – 1st International Statistics Conference organized by the University of West Attica and the Greek Statistical Institute, May 25-28, 2023.

Induction Programme @ SIT
The Induction programme is designed to instil a holistic approach in students towards life and develop a broader understanding of the way ahead. SIT holds a strong ethos in nurturing good human beings who can perform well professionally at their organizations and also participate meaningfully in the society. The programme helps students in embracing other cultures and live together in harmony. Our programme truly replicates the motto-“Vasudhaiva kutumbakam”.
The students are introduced to the institute, varied departments, clubs, the faculty, staff at the institute as well as briefed about rules and regulations, policies, vision and mission of the university and the institute. A whole range of varied activities are planned, conducted and executed well for the students. The activities range from lectures by eminent speakers, sports, cultural activities, club-specific activities, zumba, yoga, dance, music, literary activities, TED talks, session on universal human values, gender sensitization, professional ethics, communication skills, personality development, entrepreneurial activities, first aid-session, green initiative, familiarization with varied philosophies, Indian epics, classics, city tour, industrial visit, creative activities, skill-building activities, fine arts workshops, fun games, happy street etc.
The aim is to focus on the over-all development of the students who are the future of the Nation and develop their potential in all aspects; so as to make them employable and industry ready.
Awards & Accolades of the Department
- Dr Meena Laad, Head, Dept. of Applied Sciences was Co-Chair of the BRICS 4th SCIFORUM Conference organized by RUDN University, Moscow. It was truly an enriching experience to serve as a plenary speaker and chair the technical session at this conference, engaging with some of the brightest minds in the field of Space Science & Technology. The conference provided a unique platform to exchange insights, discuss cutting-edge research, and connect with esteemed professors and scientists dedicated to advancing the frontiers of space exploration. The enthusiasm and passion for innovation were palpable, making every interaction a source of inspiration.
- Dr Meena Laad received AICTE grant under Distinguished Visiting Professor scheme.

- Dr Dipika Jaspal has published 4 International and 1 National Patents, in the domain of wastewater treatment.

- Dr Meena Laad was invited as keynote speaker to the International conferences held at RUDN University (Russia), Gazi University (Turkey, Romania Technical University (Ukraine) and as moderator at Pahang University (Malaysia)
- Dr Neha Divekar, Convenor and Lead Organizer for TEDx organized TEDxSIULavale COUNTDOWN event on 27 November 2021, which was an international event for faculty, staff, students and public, which was a grand success.
- Dr Niva Devi was appointed as Speaking Examiner for KET/PET by Cambridge University, UK.
- Dr Shekhar Bhame, Dr Dipika Jaspal, Dr Ramesh Katta, Dr Neeru Bhagat and Dr Meena Laad are on Editorial Board of high impact International journals.
- Dr Brajesh Pandey received award at National level for the popularization of Science.
- Dr Nilisha Itankar received grant from the Patent Office, Govt. of India for her patent on Topic "Method of removal and recovery of hexavalent chromium from effluents by passive-active biological process". The same is published in other countries namely US, Japan, China.
- Dr Rupali Nagar received research grant by Symbiosis International University in March 2020 on “Graphene Nanosheets from plastic waste for water purification”.
- Dr Neeru Bhagat lead a Team of 300+ students to successfully help people in need of medical help pan India with the help of SIT Fights Covid.
- Dr Neha Divekar conducted Corporate trainings at L&T Defence department on Communication Skills, Transactional Analysis, Team building etc. Dr Neha also conducted a training session at Flex, Ltd., Pune on “Empowering Women Leaders” and a session on “Communication skills and Grooming” at Tata Motors.
- Dr Niva Devi Sharma conducted a Corporate Training on “Communication Skills” for 512 Army Base Workshop (Khadki Ammunitions) on Tuesday, June 07, 2022. The main focus of the workshop was to help them to make short presentations, writing emails, formal and informal letters and reports.

It was wonderful to interact with scientists and researchers of RUDN University and have discussion on novel materials for Space applications.
Dr Meena Laad visited University of Leeds, UK on Government of India’s DUO Professor Fellowship from April 10 – May 11, 2022. During her visit she carried out her research at University of Leeds on Synthesis and characterization of Composite materials.

Guest Lecture: Nature Inspired Optimization Techniques
Optimization is a crucial topic for engineering students, and to help them grasp the basics of nature-inspired optimization techniques, a guest lecture was arranged. The Applied Science department at SIT welcomed Dr. Amar Kishor, a renowned expert in nature-inspired optimization, to simplify these concepts for the students. The main goal of the lecture was to provide students with a fundamental understanding of nature-inspired optimization techniques.

A forum for interaction between the industry experts and first year students was created to prepare the students with required skills and be mentored by industry experts. The first session was held on Dec. 18, 2020 with distinguished speaker Mr. Jayant Natu, Senior Executive, Trigo India interacted with first year students.
The talk on Space materials was organized by distinguished Professor Dr Kenneth Stanton, Dept. of Material Science, University College, Dublin, Ireland for the First Year students.

A lecture on Cosmology: The Dark matter by eminent scientist Dr Subir Sarkar from Oxford University, UK was organised on May 16, 2022 under Great Talks series organized by the British Council. Prof. Subir Sarkar is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and TIFR, Mumbai. In 2017 he was awarded the prestigious Homi Bhabha Award for his distinguished work in Astrophysics.

A lecture on Data Analytics was organised at SIT on May 16, 2022 by Dr Amit Chattopadhyay from Aston University, UK. Dr Amit visited SIT as part of Exploratory grant received from British Council by the director Dr Ketan Kotecha. Dr Amit also delivered a talk on AI applications in Science and interacted with the faculty of Applied Science Department on May 18, 2022. Dr Amit is the first Indian Marie Curie fellowship winner in Physics and is a former Alexander von Humboldt fellow.

Raghav Dhoot and Adrish Purkayastha received Merit Scholarship for students from the North East Region (NER) for the academic year 2023-24.
Soham Kulkarni working as an intern at the FIST (Future of Computing Systems) Lab in the Department of CSA at IISc Bangalore, under the guidance of Prof. Sumit K Mandal. During this internship, he is co-authoring a research paper on hardware acceleration of modern computer vision workloads with hardware-software codesign. The paper aims to propose an open-source RISC-V compatible image coprocessor implementation for various computational photography tasks.
Mudita Songara's research paper got accepted in SCOPUS indexed journal with high impact factor.

Ria Vinod from FY CS C had taken part in the Queen's Commonwealth Essay competition organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society, London in June of this year. I had sent my entry on the topic: 'The 2023 Year of Youth was a moment of significant social change - What was its impact on the world?' & was awarded bronze for the same.

Ashwin Laad from CS A communicated one research paper on establishing a corelation between the heart rate and emotional analysis to an international journal and it is under review. He also participated in Hacktoberfest 2023 contributing towards open source projects on environment and sustainability. In recognition of this achievement, a tree has been planted in his name, reflecting the event's commitment to environmental sustainability.
Mehuli Majumder from First Year B.TECH in Robotics and Automation completed several certification courses on Deep learning and Tensorflow, workshops on AI Agents and Blockchain. She also participated in Techathon.
Reeti Agrawal from CS C participated in Boot camp on blockchain and cyber security & digital forensics. Completed 3 months Internship in Cyber Security & Digital Forensics at Cyber Secured India.
