Geoinformatics as a self-contained discipline only started in the late 1960s and has since been rapidly evolving. The underlying concepts and principles used today were established in the 1970s. Then, in the 1980s spatial database management systems were developed, which was a significant development in the field as it allowed the linking of computer mapping capabilities with traditional database management capabilities. This change was a result of the rapid development of computer technologies and data formats. In 1990s, technological advances made perspective analysis of maps possible, which was a huge step forward from the previously used descriptive queries. Today, geoinformatics has spread through almost all spheres of the urban life. Be it GPS, GIS, remote sensing, photogrammetry, virtual reality games or any other communication technology, geoinformatics has a major role in our everyday lives.
